Why Get a Chemical Peel?

Individuals choose to get chemical peels for a variety of different reasons. For some, the issue is sun damage and uneven pigmentation, while for others it may be wrinkles, acne, rosacea or some other skin condition that is bothering them. Chemical peels are great for exfoliating the outer layers of dead or damaged skin to reveal a fresh, new layer of skin below.

However, as with any cosmetic treatment, a chemical peel is not a one-size-fits-all procedure. Your skin type and the specific skin conditions you wish to treat will have to be taken into consideration when formulating a treatment plan.

Customizing a Chemical Peel for Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive skin, it is generally best to go with a lighter chemical peel for a gentler exfoliation. The great thing about chemical peels is that their ingredients can be easily personalized to better suit your skin type. For instance, a chemical peel for sensitive skin may include elements like soothing emollients, mild botanicals and other key ingredients that create a gentler approach to chemical peeling.

Chemical peels for sensitive skin typically use milder strength peeling agents to decrease the risk of skin irritation. Superficial peels are the mildest type of chemical peel and can be used on most all skin types. A superficial peel acts only on the surface of the skin and generally does not take long to perform. Light chemical peels are also sometimes referred to as AHA peels. AHA is short for alpha hydroxy acids. Chemical peels such as the lactic and glycolic acid peels fall into this category. Most light chemical peels for sensitive skin include these AHAs in varying concentrations, depending on the patient and their skin sensitivity.
